Philosophy / Mission Statement

The YMCA is a values-based association where we believe in a holistic approach that nurtures the whole person, in spirit, mind and body. We recognize your child as an important individual and provide personalized attention with an emphasis on your child’s unique development. At the YMCA children are at the core of our thinking, planning and doing. The enhancement of their potential and attention to their well being is first and foremost. We recognize that parents have the primary responsibility for raising their children and support your family by striving to understand and incorporate your culture, traditions and languages into your child’s activities.

We believe that children have the right to a secure environment that fosters social, emotional and physical growth. The tone and atmosphere of the YMCA Child Care centre is designed to, as much as possible, replicate a home-like setting in which the children’s needs take precedence over the needs of the centre.

Because we believe that children learn best through real experience, children are surrounded by a wide variety of materials that are readily accessible and easy to use.

Program information

Our YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum is based on the principle that play is the foundation of learning to read and write, learning mathematics, and science and technology. True play is the way young children learn, and true play provides adults with insight into what a child – at a particular moment in time – is capable of learning.

Taking the knowledge of child development, knowledge of how children learn and a well-grounded understanding of children’s play, our YMCA early educators construct learning opportunities that truly reflect the interests and needs of the children in their care. Your child will do all the things he or she wants to do with the support of an educator helping the student link cognitive skills to all aspects of self, including spiritual and emotional growth. There is story time. Time to play with blocks. Opportunities to count and compare. To make pictures and to sing. To make-believe. Your child will explore and investigate. Your child will be playing to learn.

We believe that our YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum is the best approach to ensuring your child’s continued enthusiasm and capacity for life-long learning. Our YMCA Playing to Learn has received numerous endorsements.

"YMCA Playing to Learn outlines the fundamental significance of children’s play to their healthy social and cognitive development, and the important role teachers have in establishing the foundations of lifelong learning in young children. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is pleased to endorse this publication." Phyllis Benedict, President, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario

YMCA Playing to Learn is a unique book taking a clear and masterful look at play and the developmental theories of play…providing educators with an active collaboration between theory and practice." Otto Weininger, Ph.D., C.Psych., Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto

Every now and then, a new curriculum resource comes along that really reminds those who work with young children of the joys and immediacy of learning, exploring and play that could typify the experience of young children on a more regular basis. This curriculum guide is one such resource." Donna S. Lero, PhD., Professor, Child and Family Studies, Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, University of Guelph
