Montessori Schools Canada

Montessori Schools Canada DirectoryMaria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator (1870-1952).  She worked with and studied the  learning methods of young children as well as special needs children.  Her observations working with students from 2.5 to 7 years of age led her to develop the Montessori method of early childhood educating.    Her methods of teaching are used in various forms around the world, primarily with the 3-6 year old age range, but with older and younger children as well.

The name ‘Montessori’ is used for many educational institutes, but they can vary greatly in terms of philosophies and teaching methods.   The learning curriculum for the Montessori teaching method is based on using the child's own natural inner guidance.  Materials are provided to stimulate the child’s natural instincts and interests to learn.  Through self directed activities, the child expresses outward behaviors as they learn five basic categories: practical life, sensorial, math, language, and culture.  Through the freedom of self directed learning, it is believed that the child learns at their own pace, grows independent, self directed and motivated.  Some studies have shown that children with early Montessori educations engage in more positive social interaction, show more concern for fairness and justice, and executed more control.

Regardless of the type of school or teaching method you choose for your child, the vast majority of studies show that early education is beneficial for the young, developing mind.  You can use our child care search function to find Montessori schools and other child care providers in your province.
